Lose Yourself in Lyon, France

As part of the third Eurostar video tour of France I welcome you to Lyon. If you remember, we already covered Paris

and Avignon

during the past few weeks.

Lyon, Lyon, Lyon. Ah. France’s largest city you probably never heard of. And great it is because as far as untouched cities go, this one is up there with the great unknown. What you don’t necessarily see in the video is that Lyon compliments the other big cities well. On a quick visit you can enjoy fine art museums and packed clubbing and drinking establishments. It’s one of those cities that has major universities, yet they don’t quite dominate the culture. Rather, the academics add youth to an otherwise overly sophisticated country to inject a scatter of active inhabitants who love to shop, and even pass the time reading at one of the many cafes. Though I think Unesco goes a bit overboard awarding a place a spot on their list, Avignon deserves it.

Let’s get down to the important information. The nightlife. It’s concentrated in a few main areas called Vieux Lyon, Presqu’île, Croix Rousse, the Saône riverbanks and a few others.

Dance Clubs

  • Pick Me Up – +33 (0)4 78 28 21 69
  • Soda – +33 (0)6 75 67 38 88

Piano Bars

  • Jazzy’s Corner – +33 (0)6 82 56 34 39
  • Le Cintra – +33 (0)4 78 42 54 08

  • Le Monocle – +33 (0)4 78 37 31 54
  • La Republique – +33 (0)4 78 42 59 56

Armed with a list of the top places to spend a night drinking there is no reason not to have a good time in Lyon. When you’re drinking in excess just remember where you are. You’re in the ‘city of light’ for a reason. At sundown the city’s 100 most famous sites are lit. It’s the best time to grab a spot on the nearest hill for a pregame picnic before a night out. It is international for sure, with Irish, English, Latino, Cuban and other exotic drinking places to try. But the traditional Lyonnais bars are the favorites. Bars can serve alcohol until 3AM and the minimum age for drinking is 18 years. You can find a draught beer for €3 and between €3 and €4 for a glass of wine in most bars in Lyon.
